Very rainy Spring so far - over 40 inch rain already to date for 2023. Daily moderate to heavy rains often starting before noon most of April and May. Thankfully the leaf rust seems to be staying under control for the time being- I think in large part because of the Kocide-o application about 3 weeks ago....we will see how it goes as the wet season progresses, but Im optimistic that we can do better than last year. Overall growth in the field looks much improved thanks to the new fertilizer regime. Soon it will be time for another application of fertilizer- most likely feather meal plus sulfate of potash. Goal is 3 applications this year focusing on the potassium deficiency found with soil testing last August. Spring planting has started with 25 new trees so far in the ground. 10 Liberica and 15 Geisha seedlings were planted in the field in early May. Goal is 100 new seedlings planted this season. Most will be Castillo variety which is said to be very resistant to leaf rust....
